“As a Holy Familian, you can always feel the warmth of being in a family.”

As a proud graduate of both Holy Family Canossian School (Kowloon Tong) (HFCSKT) and Holy Family Canossian College (HFCC), I have got nine years of fond memories in this big family. In hindsight, when I first came across “Canossian” and “Holy Family” in Primary Three, I was reluctant since my parents were sending me to a new school. Nonetheless, I never regret and still genuinely feel that it was the luckiest transition in my life to join Holy Family, shaping the person I am today. Now, as I embark on my journey towards becoming a physician at The University of Hong Kong, I look back and reflect that I wouldn’t have been poised or competent to actualise my all-time aspiration to be someone’s angel in white if not because of HFCC. I have always wanted to express my sincerest gratitude to my school, and this acts as a tribute to my alma mater.

HFCC has always been more than just a place of learning – it has been a crucible where our characters are forged, our dreams are nurtured, and the leaders of tomorrow are moulded. The unwavering support and guidance I received from the dedicated teachers have been instrumental to me. Not only do they nurture students academically, but they also teach me life lessons, offer solace when needed, guide me towards the right direction when I was lost and help me explore potential beyond limits. They never just look for good grades, but yearn for holistic development for us to be outstanding leaders who can be proud of ourselves and contribute to the society. Alongside the academic curriculum, a myriad of enriching experiences were offered at HFCC. For instance, I was an Executive Committee Member of the Students’ Association. It hardwired me with a deep appreciation for teamwork, creativity, and the power of communication. Various competitions like public speaking honed my critical thinking and speaking skills. All of these compounded and transformed me from a timid little girl to a confident yet humble and mature lady.

HFCC will forever hold a special place in my heart with the bonds and camaraderie I built here. Reminiscing the old days of studying in classrooms in that iconic pink uniform, nostalgic feelings rushed in. This pink castle holds many serendipities in my life with all teachers and my friends who once chased our dreams together. The edge of being a Holy Familian is that you forever feel the homeliness.

The lessons I have learned and the bonds I have forged here as a family will ceaselessly be the cornerstones upon which I build my future. Your profound impact will be felt not only in my own life but also in the countless lives I hope to touch as a future doctor.

“Holy Family opened doors to opportunities that I eagerly embraced, allowing me to improve under the support of my loving teachers.”

If I were to describe my secondary school life succinctly, I would call it an early adventure in intellectual pursuits. Holy Family opened doors to opportunities that I eagerly embraced, allowing me to improve under the support of my loving teachers. I remember receiving writing and speech awards internally and externally; and participating in extracurricular activities, including the Head Prefect Core Group, School Magazine Team, Netball Team, Choir, and Drama Club.  It was truly amazing. Each opportunity made me learn something, and every time I did, I saw a world that had never been quite the same again.

One transformative journey that I would like to highlight was studying Literature in English. I am always grateful that our school offers this subject. Each lesson, led by my caring teacher, opened up a world of literary texts that confronted what I thought I was familiar with. Through the lessons, I gradually became more expressive in eloquence, sensitive in experiencing emotions, and critical in channelling rationality. They also left me indelible marks, and I can still recall some of the lines verbatim. The language proficiency and depth of analysis developed through my literature studies laid a strong foundation for my studies in law and philosophy, where nuanced understanding and sceptical inquiry are particularly useful.

Another pivotal chapter was joining the Students’ Association. Under the mentorship of our teacher adviser, I gained valuable skills in teamwork and leadership. I learned the importance of attention to detail during busy events, the art of selective speech, and how to build an effective student body. I still remember how we brainstormed names for our committee each year, and finally settled on “Aliferous” and “Florescence”, which mean “flying high” and “to flourish”. I am glad that I took the flight, and I hold onto the hope that the ongoing pursuits once ignited by my alma mater will eventually lead me to new heights where I can see destinations of blossoming flowers.

In this reflective journey, fleeting moments drift back to me – the joyful laughter of my classmates, sunrays touching through the trees outside the window, and the soft glow of stage lights in the school hall. Towards the end of being borne back to the past, I realize how much I enjoyed my time in Holy Family. To everyone reading this, I genuinely hope you find happiness in yours as well.
