Visit to the Legislative Council Complex on 10 July 2026

Today, the S3 students visited the Legislative Council (LegCo) Complex.  We explored various parts of the building and participated in an exciting role-play session.  We were incredibly fortunate to have a special guest guide us: Professor Alex Fan, a current member of the Legislative Council.  His presence made the experience deeply personal, as he provided unique, real-world insights into local governance that we could never gather from a textbook alone.

Our tour began with visits to several significant areas, including the Ante-Chamber and the Main Chamber. Standing inside the Main Chamber—the very room where crucial decisions that shape our society are made—was a profound experience that truly broadened my horizons.  Seeing the physical space where representatives gather to debate policies and represent the citizens of Hong Kong made the abstract concept of government feel suddenly real and relevant to my daily life.

We also walked through a historical corridor that showcases the evolution of the legislature.  This timeline provided wonderful context, helping us appreciate how Hong Kong's governance has grown over the years to support the modern city we see today.  Adding to the inspiration was the corridor’s stunning, panoramic view of Victoria Harbour.  Looking out at the skyline served as a beautiful, visual reminder of the vibrant city that these lawmakers work to protect and improve.

Following the tour, we moved to a mock briefing room for a hands-on role-play session designed to help us understand the legislative process.  Our teacher invited classmates to take on various roles, including the President, the Secretary, and several council members.  While some of my peers initially felt nervous or stumbled over the complex legal terminology, everyone gave their best effort to maintain the polite behaviour required for such a serious setting.

Simulating a structured debate allowed us to step directly into the shoes of our leaders.  I learned that passing a law requires immense preparation, active listening, and the ability to view a single issue from multiple perspectives.  This interactive experience transformed abstract civic concepts into a tangible, high-energy event.  It was the perfect blend of historical discovery and experiential learning, leaving us laughing and learning simultaneously.  I left the Complex with a much deeper appreciation for the dedication it takes to govern our city.
